During each of the past several years,
Master Gardeners have sold over 600 poinsettias, making nearly $3000
annually for the scholarship fund. These florist quality poinsettias
come in four colors and are vibrant and extra large—a great value
for the consumer. They are grown locally, at Peterson's Wholesale
Growers, the largest poinsettia grower in south Texas. With minimal
care, the plants will easily last until February and beyond—or you
can plant them in your yard to enjoy another year. Monies raised
from the sales go fund the Bexar County Master Gardener
Scholarship(s) in Horticulture Studies. The $2000 scholarships are
awarded annually to Horticulture majors in any Texas University.
Details of the scholarship and applications are located on the
website. Poinsettia orders are taken throughout the fall, with
delivery and pick-up at the Extension Office in early December. A
large number of Master Gardener volunteers turn out to unload the
trucks, sort the plants, and assist patrons with moving their orders
to the car. It is a busy, busy day! To order your poinsettias, look
for an order form on the website in September!
